Best File Type for DTF Printing

Best File Type for DTF Printing (PNG vs PDF) + Common Upload Mistakes

If you want your transfers to print sharp, clean, and vibrant, your file matters just as much as the press.

At Primal Graphx — Charlotte, NC’s #1 premium DTF provider, we check artwork every day, and most delays come from the same few file issues. This guide will help you submit your design the right way the first time.

The best file type for DTF (our #1 recommendation)

For most customers, the best file to upload is:

  • PNG with a transparent background

Why PNG?

  • Keeps edges clean

  • Supports transparency (no unwanted background box)

  • Works great for full-color designs

When should you use a PDF?

A PDF can be a good option when:

  • Your design is vector-based (logos, clean shapes)

  • You have lots of text and want it crisp

  • You’re exporting from Illustrator or a professional design program

If you’re not sure, upload what you have — we’ll tell you what’s best.

Your quick “print-ready” checklist

Before you upload, make sure your file is:

  • PNG (preferred) with transparent background

  • High resolution (clean edges when you zoom in)

  • Correct size or close to the size you want printed

  • Spelled correctly (names, dates, team names)

  • Not a screenshot

Common upload mistakes (and how to fix them)

Mistake 1: A background you didn’t mean to include

This is the most common one. People upload a design with a white/black box behind it.

Fix: Export as PNG with transparent background.

Mistake 2: Low-resolution or blurry artwork

If it looks fuzzy on your phone, it will look fuzzy on the shirt.

Fix: Use the original file, not a screenshot. If you only have a small image, ask us about redesign options.

Mistake 3: Tiny text and thin lines

Super thin details can get lost or fill in.

Fix: Thicken lines, increase text size, and use bolder fonts.

Mistake 4: Uploading a screenshot or social media image

Screenshots and images pulled from Instagram/Facebook are usually compressed.

Fix: Upload the original design file or a high-res export.

Mistake 5: Expecting us to “remove the background” automatically

We can help, but it’s best when it’s intentional.

Fix: Send a transparent PNG, or ask us to clean it up.
