How to Apply a DTF Transfer

How to Apply a DTF Transfer (Step-by-Step)

If you’re new to DTF transfers, you’re going to love how simple the process is once you know the basics. The key is using the right heat, pressure, and timing—and pressing in a clean, consistent way.

This guide breaks it down step-by-step so you can get a smooth finish, strong adhesion, and long-lasting results.

What you’ll need

  • A heat press (recommended for consistent pressure)

  • Your garment (shirt, hoodie, tote, etc.)

  • Your DTF transfer

  • A lint roller (highly recommended)

  • Optional: a finishing sheet (parchment paper or a Teflon sheet)

Step 1: Prep your garment

  1. Lint roll the area where the transfer will go.

Lint and fuzz can cause tiny gaps and weak spots.

  2. Pre-press the garment for a few seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.

This helps the transfer bond evenly.

Step 2: Position your transfer

  • Place the transfer print-side down on the garment.

  • Make sure it’s straight and centered.

Quick placement tips:

  • For a standard front chest design, aim for about 2–3 inches below the collar.

  • For a left-chest logo, keep it clean and slightly higher than you think.

Step 3: Press the transfer

Press settings can vary by heat press and garment, but here’s the simple rule:

  • Use firm, even pressure

  • Press for the recommended time

  • Don’t slide the press (set it straight down)

If you’re unsure about settings for your specific garment, reach out to Primal Graphx and we’ll help you dial it in.

Step 4: Peel (hot peel vs cold peel)

This part depends on the type of film/transfer.

  • Hot peel: peel shortly after pressing while it’s still warm

  • Cold peel: let it cool completely before peeling

If you peel too early on a cold-peel transfer, you can lift edges or cause patchy adhesion.

Step 5: Finish press (the step that makes it look pro)

After peeling, do a quick finish press to lock it in and smooth the texture.

  1. Cover the design with a Teflon sheet or parchment paper

  2. Press again briefly using the same pressure

This helps:

  • Improve durability

  • Reduce shine (depending on finish sheet)

  • Give the transfer a cleaner, more professional look

Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)

  • Not lint rolling: causes weak spots and tiny bubbles

  • Too little pressure: edges may lift

  • Wrong peel timing: can pull parts of the design up

  • Skipping the finish press: design may feel rougher than it needs to

How to wash garments with DTF transfers

To keep your prints looking fresh:

  • Wait 24 hours before the first wash (best practice)

  • Wash inside out

  • Use cold or warm water

  • Avoid harsh bleach

  • Tumble dry low or hang dry when possible
