What you need

  • heat press

  • lint roller

  • parchment paper or Teflon sheet

  • a flat, firm pressing surface

  • your garment

  • your DTF transfer

Step-by-step: how to press DTF transfers

Step 1: Pre-press the shirt

  • press the shirt for a few seconds

  • this removes moisture and smooths wrinkles

Moisture is one of the biggest reasons transfers lift or peel.

Step 2: Lint roll the pressing area

  • lint and fibers can cause tiny gaps

  • those gaps can lead to edge lifting

Step 3: Position the transfer

  • place the transfer where you want it

  • keep it straight

  • make sure the shirt is flat and not stretched

Tip: for a standard full front, most designs sit a few inches below the collar, but placement depends on the shirt size and the look you want.

Step 4: Press with the correct settings

Your exact settings can vary by transfer type and press, but the goal is always the same:

  • correct temperature

  • consistent time

  • firm, even pressure

If you are unsure, start with the instructions provided with your transfers and test one shirt before doing a full run.

Step 5: Peel the film the right way

DTF transfers can be hot peel or cold peel.

  • hot peel: peel shortly after pressing

  • cold peel: wait until it cools fully, then peel

If you peel too early on a cold peel transfer, it can lift.

Step 6: Finish press

After peeling:

  • cover with parchment or a Teflon sheet

  • press again briefly

This helps lock in the print and improves the finish.

Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)

  • skipping pre-press (moisture issues)

  • pressing on a soft surface (uneven pressure)

  • not enough pressure (edges lift)

  • peeling at the wrong time

  • not doing a finish press

Want to save money? Use gang sheets

If you are pressing multiple designs or multiple sizes, gang sheets help you maximize space and lower cost per print.

FAQ

Can I use an iron instead of a heat press?

A heat press is strongly recommended for consistent pressure and heat. Irons can work for emergencies, but results vary.

Why did my transfer lift on the edges?

Most often it is moisture, not enough pressure, or peeling too early.

Can you help with artwork?

Yes. Primal Graphx offers graphic designing to clean up files and make them press-ready.
